Statement by National NOW President Christian F. Nunes 

WASHINGTON, D.C. —Christian F. Nunes, National NOW President, issued the following statement on the passing of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX):

“Women lost a steadfast friend, ally, mentor, and example in the passing of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.  For nearly three decades in Congress, she was an unmistakable presence and formidable force in fighting for social justice, fairness, and equity for all.  She never hesitated to side with those most in need of a fierce advocate—taking early stands against the Iraq War and as a fighter for LGBTQIA+ rights.  And she led the effort to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), making sure Congress did its part to fight the epidemic of domestic violence and stalking.

Sheila Jackson Lee began her career as an underdog and became a household name in her district, a national leader, and a progressive champion we will never forget.  Rest in peace and power, Sheila Jackson Lee.

Statement by National NOW President Christian F. Nunes 

WASHINGTON, DC–We knew he was going to select a running mate who would fall in line with former President Donald Trump’s extremist positions that endanger women’s lives, and J.D. Vance has always supported the most restrictive abortion bans and other ways to take away women’s control over their bodily autonomy. 

But what’s even more dangerous is that Vance has a record of his own and ambition to continue Trump’s policies into a Vance presidency.  Trump and Vance will use this campaign to tear down the Biden/Harris record of doing more for women than any other administration. 

But women know when they’re being lied to—and we know the truth about J.D. Vance —and the truth about Donald Trump.  The Trump/Vance ticket is a threat to democracy—but women can save democracy, and we won’t retreat from that mission.
