Health care plan will hit women hardest

Palm Beach Post, Letter to the Editor

Health care plan will hit women hardest

When I had breast cancer, I was forced to deal with a pre-existing condition and the abysmal Florida High-Risk Insurance Pool. And as always, women are hit with the hardest choices by the “13 old men” in the Senate who created this Trumpcare catastrophe. If passed, women will go back to the days when we paid more for the same health coverage as men. We will also be charged five times more when we reach our 50s, which is the most vulnerable age for women to develop breast cancer.

Planned Parenthood would be defunded even though the Hyde Amendment prevents federal taxpayer money to be used to fund abortions. Poor women on Medicaid would not receive prevention, diagnosis or treatment. They would be abandoned, and many will die.

Would the 13 men on the Senate task force want this fate for their mothers, wives or sisters?

Nancy Mead Honored as Woman of Achievement by Oregon Commission for Women

We are thrilled to share the news that Nancy Mead, past president of Central Oregon Coast NOW and current Oregon NOW and National NOW board member, will receive the Oregon Commission for Women (OCFW) 2016 Women of Achievement Award, along with Chanpone Sinlapasai-Okamura.

Those of us who have had the pleasure of knowing and advocating alongside Nancy know that this recognition is well deserved. Nancy is a tireless champion for the rights of all women and girls. After a distinguished career as a judge of the District and Circuit Courts for Washington County, working on domestic violence issues on behalf of vulnerable communities, she retired and moved to Depoe Bay where she advocates full-time for women’s equity on the local, state and national levels. After founding the highly successful Central Coast Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) with community and educational services for women and girls, she joined the NOW national board with specific interests for promoting the national Equal Rights Amendment and ending mass incarceration. Nancy’s advocacy is inspired by her three granddaughters and her wish for an equitable future for them.

Nancy and Chanpone will receive their awards in a ceremony to be held March 8, 2017. The full press release is available here.
