Donald Trump asked the Texas legislature to redraw election maps to steal five congressional seats. So Rep. Johnson joined a group of representatives who have left the state to grind this anti-democracy plot to a halt.¹

And she’s been VERY loud about exactly what the Texas extremists have been trying to pull, saying,

“When Donald Trump called Georgia and said find me 11,000 votes, they said, no sir, that’s a step too far. But when Trump called Texas Republicans and said I need you to steal me five seats, they said, does July work for you?”

Extremists have accused Rep. Johnson of abandoning her job, but she doesn’t see it that way: “Abandoning your job is going to Cancun in the middle of a deadly freeze.** What we are doing is the fundamental protection by our founding fathers in the Texas Constitution.”

And Texans agree with her. A recent poll found that almost two-thirds of voters in the state think this map redrawing scheme isn’t what the legislature should be spending time on. Instead, they want relief and increased warning systems in the wake of the recent flooding Texas suffered.²

Rep. Johnson and her fellow Democrats have faced bomb threats, attempts to remove them from their jobs, investigation by Trump’s FBI, and harassment from others nationwide.³ But they’re not backing down.

That’s because they know this isn’t just about five congressional seats in Texas – it’s about protecting democracy. Today this is happening in Texas. Florida, California, and several other states are already talking about redrawing their maps to join the fray.⁴
