From Red Wine & Blue: How We Choose Who’s in Charge
|
Determining who ends up in power isn’t always as simple as some of those songs we learned in elementary school made it seem. With some state primary elections right around the corner, we’re starting our Civics Salons right away to help you feel confident and ready. |

Have you ever wondered why our elections work the way they do? And why does it seem like some votes count more than others, especially when the stakes are high? We’ll break down the basics about how our voting systems work, including things like ranked choice and proportional voting. You’ll leave this Voting 101 session with a clearer understanding of these systems and how they help shape our political leadership. We’ll look at how our voting districts are created and why some of them look like snakes and ducks. You might be surprised by how we got here and why battles over redistricting and gerrymandering are still being fought today. The history of voting rights in America hasn’t always been as fair as we’d like to think, so we’ll also discuss what reforms could make our systems live up to the promise of our representative democracy. We’ve got a lot of work to do to win some pivotal elections this fall, so let’s get back to basics first and make sure we all feel informed and ready to go. |
