TO HONOR 55TH ANNIVERSARY OF NOW  

WITH NATIONAL PRESIDENT CHRISTIAN F. NUNES AND GUEST SPEAKERS 

Washington, D.C. – Fifty-five years ago, the largest feminist organization in the nation began a movement in a hotel room with 28 frustrated women working towards ending sex discrimination. From that day on, NOW has been at the frontlines of the feminist movement, advocating for issues ranging from reproductive rights to climate justice and beyond. From championing and stewarding landmark legislation like Title IX, the ERA and the Violence Against Women Act to mobilizing tens of thousands of women at the Women’s Strike for Equality in 1970 and 1.15 million marchers at the March for Women’s Lives, NOW’s commitment to grassroots organization is what continues to drive our mission. 

On Wednesday, June 30, the National Organization for Women will celebrate the 55th Anniversary of its founding with a virtual program featuring a fireside chat and Q&A session with National NOW President Christian F. Nunes and distinguished guest speakers.  

This a celebration of how much we’ve accomplished and a reflection on what we still have left to do. The anniversary event will kick off a series of events that will honor the efforts of our many grassroots leaders and members who have worked tirelessly to make NOW what it is today. The event’s speakers are a diverse group of thought leaders, experts and activists who will bring forth lively discussion and answer questions on critical women’s rights issues.  

NOW encourages members, prospective members, and anyone interested in learning more about the intersectional feminist agenda to attend the virtual program and join us in celebrating this special milestone.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In an important victory for Title IX, and for transgender students, the Supreme Court today left in place a lower court ruling requiring a Virginia high school to allow transgender student Gavin Grimm to use the bathroom that conformed to his gender identity. 

Though Title IX prohibits schools from discriminating “on the basis of sex,” the Trump administration rolled back a host of protections for transgender people.  It is gratifying to see the Supreme Court give a victory to transgender students today in a 7-2 decision.  

Today, the Supreme Court got it right—but there are other cases in the pipeline and other discriminatory policies that NOW will continue to challenge.  We need courts, laws, and politicians to stand up against bullying and discrimination directed at transgender students, and NOW will keep pushing towards that goal. 

We need to strengthen and enforce Title IX, and deliver on the promise of “justice for all,” with no exceptions. Trans people will not be erased—not from history, not from civil rights, and not from our schools. NOW stands with the trans community and reaffirms our commitment to supporting and promoting policies that protect and uplift trans and non–binary people.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the National Organization for Women recognizes Juneteenth– the holiday commemorating the day the last enslaved people in this country were finally freed. While Juneteenth has long been celebrated by the Black community, many Americans don’t even know the history of the holiday. This lack of awareness is another example of how history is told and distorted by those in power.  

In 2021, Juneteenth has more profound importance than ever as we’ve seen how racial discrimination is still very much an American value and how we have failed – and continue to fail – as a country to listen to people of color.  

To achieve racial justice, we need to fully recognize and discuss the history of race in this country, especially our relationship to slavery and how it has played a role in creating the inequitable structures that exist in society today.  

NOW is dedicated to doing better, and pushing our society to do better. We can start by amplifying diverse voices and experiences whenever we talk about the history of our country. And while making Juneteenth a federal holiday is a move in the right direction to more visibly recognize our country’s past, we need to continue urging our leaders to bring racial issues to the forefront with more concrete actions, for example by making critical race theory part of educational curriculums and passing important legislation like S.1, For the People Act, which works to eliminate oppressive bills embedded with racism and oppression.  

This Juneteenth NOW celebrates the bravery and resilience of the enslaved women and men on which our country was founded and honors their legacy through our commitment to educating our members and uplifting marginalized voices when we talk about the past, present, and future. We know we cannot effectively or holistically promote anti-sexism without being anti-racist as well.
