NOW Commemorates Juneteenth

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the National Organization for Women recognizes Juneteenth– the holiday commemorating the day the last enslaved people in this country were finally freed. While Juneteenth has long been celebrated by the Black community, many Americans don’t even know the history of the holiday. This lack of awareness is another example of how history is told and distorted by those in power.

In 2021, Juneteenth has more profound importance than ever as we’ve seen how racial discrimination is still very much an American value and how we have failed – and continue to fail – as a country to listen to people of color.

To achieve racial justice, we need to fully recognize and discuss the history of race in this country, especially our relationship to slavery and how it has played a role in creating the inequitable structures that exist in society today.

NOW is dedicated to doing better, and pushing our society to do better. We can start by amplifying diverse voices and experiences whenever we talk about the history of our country. And while making Juneteenth a federal holiday is a move in the right direction to more visibly recognize our country’s past, we need to continue urging our leaders to bring racial issues to the forefront with more concrete actions, for example by making critical race theory part of educational curriculums and passing important legislation like S.1, For the People Act, which works to eliminate oppressive bills embedded with racism and oppression.

This Juneteenth NOW celebrates the bravery and resilience of the enslaved women and men on which our country was founded and honors their legacy through our commitment to educating our members and uplifting marginalized voices when we talk about the past, present, and future. We know we cannot effectively or holistically promote anti-sexism without being anti-racist as well.

NOW Applauds Senate Confirmation of Kristen Clarke

Released on May 25, 2021

The Senate vote to confirm Kristen Clarke as Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division was narrow—but the victory for civil rights was enormous.

Kristen Clarke will be the first Black woman to lead the Civil Rights Division, and she is unquestionably one of the most qualified, experienced, and talented individuals to ever be considered by the Senate.

She began her career in the Civil Rights Division, where she prosecuted police misconduct, police brutality, hate crimes, and voting rights cases.  And as Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, she led the fight against voter suppression, white supremacy, and hate crimes, and police brutality against peaceful Black protesters.

Senate Republicans who owe their political fortunes to the forces of extremism and white supremacy fought to defeat this nomination—but thanks to grassroots support mobilized by many coalition groups, Kristen Clarke will now be in a position to thwart these dangerous elements and erase structural racism from our system of justice.

The closeness of today’s vote reminds us how important it is to stay engaged, stay organized, and stay committed to our mission. NOW congratulates Kristen Clarke on today’s vote, and we look forward to seeing her lead the charge for equal rights and justice.

NOW Participates in AAPI Day Against Bullying and Hate 2021

Released on May 18, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – NOW is pleased to participate in 2021’s AAPI Day Against Bullying and Hate. Given the horrifying rise in hate crimes against Asian-Americans in recent months, today is an especially critical day to recognize the unjust incidents of hate and bullying that have caused trauma, pain and damage to the AAPI community as well as to come together to ensure change.

Hate and discrimination against Asian-Americans are not new. They build upon a deeply-rooted history of structural racism and discrimination in the United States. NOW stands beside the AAPI community in acknowledging their struggles as well as making sure we take a stand to ensure policy and cultural change in order to eliminate bullying and hate. Cultural shifts must happen through listening, raising awareness, and having conversations.

In recent months, we shared a heavy heart with the rise in reports of attacks on elderly Asian Americans and the horrific shooting in Atlanta-area. A recent analysis released by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism examined hate crimes in 16 of America’s largest cities and revealed that crimes targeting Asian people rose by nearly 150% in 2020.

Bullying can cause lasting trauma. Asian-American students reported 343 incidents of hate and bullying between March 2020 and February 2021. In the summer of 2020, during the initial peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, 77% of Asian-American youth expressed anger over the anti–Asian hate in this nation. It is unacceptable that young Asian-Americans live in fear due to the climate of hatred that surrounds them in schools and in their communities.

We are encouraged by the bipartisan effort to pass the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act but policy change is urgent and must come from all Americans rallying behind other crucial bills such as Jabara-Heyer NO HATE Act and the End Racial Profiling Act. The NO HATE Act would streamline reporting systems nationally, train law enforcement on investigating hate crimes, create a hate crimes hotline, create programs to rehabilitate perpetrators, and expand resources for victims of hate crimes. The End Racial Profiling Act would create a ban on racial profiling and mandate training on racial profiling in all Federal law enforcement training. We must mobilize our efforts to contact our Representatives and demand that they support these pieces of legislation that address the growing issue of bullying and hate.

NOW firmly believes in the value of active listening and learning, which is why it will take all of us to create and promote spaces of respect, inclusion, racial empathy, and justice. We can and must end bullying and hate against the AAPI community once and for all.
