The company saw a 40 percent jump in shares Wednesday alone, and its share price went from $14.18 the day before the election to $24.43 on Thursday.
In 2023, 43 percent of Geo Group’s top-line revenue, more than $2.4 billion, came from contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “

Women’s Paychecks Are Shrinking—And Policy Isn’t Keeping Up

Last September, the National Partnership for Women and Families reported the wage gap for all women workers had widened to 75 cents for every dollar men earned, representing a 3-cent decrease in real pay per hour for women. While on the surface this may seem negligible in a paycheck, even a seemingly small increase in wage disparity dramatically impacts the significant gains in pay since the 1980s. American Progress reports that with this current backslide, it will now take until 2068 to close the wage gap.

I graduated from the Jefferson Medical College Hospital of Philadelphia in 1965, majoring in medical technology. I went on to work for other hospitals over the years, mainly in clinical bacteriology and infection control.
In 1970, I worked in the bacteriology laboratory at Episcopal Hospital. I was in the early stage of pregnancy with my first child, Joy, when I was exposed to a patient who was suspected of having German measles, also called rubella. Unfortuantely, I did not know this at the time I was drawing his blood for lab tests. Exposure in the early months of pregnancy could cause permanent birth defects. The measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine was not available until 1971 to protect children and pregnant women. All that could be done for me was to test my blood that day to see if I had antibodies to protect myself and my fetus. I was tested again in two weeks, but the results were inconclusive, so I didn’t know if my fetus would be affected. Thankfully she was born with no birth defects, but I didn’t know that through my entire pregnancy. Abortion was still not legal until 1973.

NOW Celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act

September 13, 2024, marks the 30th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and is a day of both celebration and rededication.
Thanks in large part to President Biden, who led the original fight for VAWA in the U.S. Senate, we now have a federal law that commits resources to survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence.
And when President Biden signed the VAWA Reauthorization Act of 2022, he secured the highest-ever funding level for VAWA implementation, strengthened services, and made it easier for survivors to hold offenders accountable, among other changes.
We must continue to defend and strengthen VAWA, including a shift in funding away from the legal system and to culturally specific victim programs, economic and housing programs that target the pressing needs of BIPOC female survivors. This includes ending the crisis of insufficient beds and shelters to accommodate survivors—an annual survey by the National Network to End Domestic Violence of about 1,800 shelters in one day shows that these shelters turned away 13,335 domestic violence survivors and their families.
We need consistent funding and a commitment from leaders that there can be no safe harbor for any kind of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking—including the new scourge of AI generated deepfake images. We need legislation in Congress and the states to make the sexual exploitation of deepfake imagery illegal and hold wrongdoers accountable.
This anniversary is a day to recognize all that we’ve accomplished, and all that’s still left to do.
