Statement by NOW President Toni Van Pelt on the resignation of Al Franken

Al Franken was right to resign. He’s been a good Senator, but his career cannot be valued higher than his obligation to treat women with respect. Minnesota will get another good Senator, and I hope it’s a woman.

Once all the prominent people who’ve been revealed to have sexually harassed co-workers resign, there will still be a culture that disrespects women in place. Al Franken is not the problem. The problem is a workplace culture that treats women as objects and accommodates their abusers.

It’s not about how many famous people have to resign, or whether they’re Democrats or Republicans. It’s about men who protect men, institutions that protect their own, and a legal system that protects victimizers over victims.

NOW President Toni Van Pelt Addresses Supreme Court Rally for LGBT Rights

“There Is No Constitutional Right to Discriminate”:

Toni Van Pelt, President of the National Organization for Women (NOW), spoke this morning at a rally organized by the ACLU legal team on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court. The Court heard arguments today in the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, which involves a business that is open to the public refusing to sell a wedding cake to a couple because they were gay.

Toni Van Pelt’s prepared remarks are as follows:

I am Toni Van Pelt, President of NOW, the National Organization for Women. The NOW Foundation joined the amicus brief in this case because our mission is to assure that women and LGBT persons are treated fairly and equally under the law. In theory, that puts us in accord with the motto inscribed in this building’s majestic marble —“Equal Justice Under Law.” But the truth, as we all know, is that women and marginalized communities have long suffered injustice and discrimination when right-wing political agendas pollute the fair interpretation and enforcement of our laws.

Proponents of discrimination have routinely used religion to justify their hurtful policies. Shameful examples include slavery in the United States and segregation in the Deep South. We confronted that chapter of our history a generation ago, which is why we now have laws that ensure businesses don’t discriminate against customers based on who they are.

But we’re still fighting for equal justice under law. Today, women are denied basic health care like birth control, emergency contraception, and abortion – in the name of religion. And the same politicians and groups that are still fighting—despite laws that say they have no basis to do so—against the rights of Americans to marry the people they love are once again using religion to defend their hate speech.

A decision in this case in favor of a constitutional right to discriminate would open the floodgates to further discrimination against women of color, transgender women, single women, working women, immigrant women—anyone and everyone at risk of being marginalized by those who see them as less than equal.

We all know what discrimination feels like. It hurts. And it’s wrong.

Today, we stand on these steps to remind the Supreme Court that discrimination is also unconstitutional. They must find in favor of the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, in favor of Charlie Craig and Dave Mullins, and in favor of those words the Justices see every time they pass through this door—“Equal Justice Under Law.”

Senate Passes a #BadDealForWomen

Statement of NOW President Toni Van Pelt:

The Senate tax bill passed today is a #BadDealForWomen. This ugly bill illustrates just how out of whack conservatives’ priorities are–paying for tax cuts for billionaires and millionaires by taking from women and their families.

Raced through the Senate with little transparency–language was finalized just hours before the bill came to a vote–the bill undermines women’s health, autonomy, and security from all angles.

It would shred social programs that sustain women. Billions of dollars would be cut from Medicare and Medicaid; funding for child care, food assistance, public education, and more would be threatened. As always, marginalized individuals–notably low-income women–will be hit hardest of all.

Even more chilling are the implications for healthcare. Under this plan, an estimated 13 million people will lose their health insurance–destabilizing the market for all.

It also lays the groundwork for conservatives to further undermine reproductive rights. The bill includes disturbing fetal “personhood” language, included only to build momentum for future rollbacks of access to abortion care and birth control.

It is clear whom this bill will wound–while giving a boost to the wealthy, and undermining our economic system as a whole. Women should be outraged that their senators so clearly voted against the interests of their constituents–and remember that vote next Election Day.

Shape the Conversation and Build Momentum

In solidarity with the many women bravely coming forward with personal experiences of sexual harassment and assault, Oregon NOW wrote a letter to the editor (“Rape culture at the Capitol: Letter to the Editor“) on the need to change the culture at the Oregon state capitol — and The Oregonian’s editorial board agrees (“Oregon Capitol Needs a Culture Change: Editorial“). But we also know – from the stories flooding the media and from our own lived experiences – that the culture around sexual violence and sexual harassment needs to change everywhere. #MeToo

We invite you to help shape the conversation and build momentum where you live by submitting your own letter to the editor (LTE) to a newspaper in your community. Thanks to the Oregon Alliance Against Violence Against Women for these tips on submitting an LTE:

  1. In general, LTEs are short, only 250 words or less. Keep it brief and impactful!
  2. Promote a unified message. Consider incorporating some of the following messages or ideas:
  • Sexual violence is a pervasive problem in Oregon. It doesn’t just impact individual Oregonians; it impacts families and communities across every corner of the state.
  • When people are forced to choose between their safety and their livelihood, no one comes out ahead: not the survivor, their family, their place of business, or the community.
  • Sexual violence is a community problem. The community needs to be part of the solution. Sexual violence is more than an individual’s actions, it is influenced by our cultural beliefs, practices, and structures. Together, our communities can change those influences.
  • It doesn’t have to be this way. We all have a role in creating the world we want to live in.
  • The #metoo campaign began 10 years ago. Let’s continue to talk about sexual violence—and let’s take action to create safe, healthy communities. Our leaders in Salem have supported bipartisan efforts to create more safety for survivors, but more needs to be done.

3.  Speak to what you’re seeing in your community. Have more survivors been reaching out? What types of support can survivors expect when they reach out?

4.  As always, maintain confidentiality.

In solidarity,

Lisa & Michelle
