In 1992, Jacqui came up with the idea of creating an organization of activists from the women’s movement of the 1960s and ’70s.
Jacqui is turning 99 on September 8!!!
She would love to hear from all of us who are so grateful to her. You can send birthday greetings to her via emails to [email protected].
Added here by Natalie Andre, PBC NOW Board VP:
I met Jacqui at a NOW conference in Miami in the 1990’s, and hosted her. She told me all about her involvement in a protest at the Statue of Liberty. She wrapped the banner seen here around her leg, covering it up with her pants. It was very hard to walk up the stairs with a straight leg—I guess anyone noticing her assumed she was crippled! Then she and her accomplices unfurled it.

It was August 10, 1970. (The same day the House of Representatives approved the Women’s Rights amendment of the Constitution.)
They were arrested but Mayor Lindsay had them released after the public uproar—I assume on the basis of freedom of speech.
