WASHINGTON, D.C. – This Women’s History Month and every month, NOW celebrates women’s historic achievements in the national spotlight and behind the scenes. Even now as women are bearing the brunt of a national health and economic crisis and are still the majority of frontline and essential workers battling COVID-19, they continue to overcome the obstacles before them and make strides toward equality.
While last year we saw the Trump administration’s overwhelmingly white, male, and unqualified political appointees continually infringe upon our rights, women can now celebrate as President Biden has appointed a historically diverse Cabinet, in terms of both race and gender.
NOW applauds amazing women like Deb Haaland, who will be the first Native person to head the Department of the Interior, the federal executive department that deals mostly with the well–being of Native communities in the United States. We cheer Marcia Fudge, the third woman and second Black woman in her position, who will lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development through one of the country’s largest and most dangerous housing crises. And there are so many more women making their mark on history as a part of this new administration.
Of course, this administration is also historic because it includes the first–ever female, first Black, and first Asian American Vice President, Kamala Harris. In her acceptance speech following the 2020 election, she said, “I may be the first woman to hold this office. But I won’t be the last.” She knows that she now has the responsibility to lift up other women, just as women before her have paved the way for her accomplishments.
Behind every great woman are many more great women working to empower one another. From Black Lives Matter organizers, to those working for immigrant justice and environmental justice – to those who led organizing efforts across the country in elections from the presidency to town councils – to the women who shattered glass ceilings in sports, science, and the arts –the powerful work of women continues to make a historic impact all across the country.
NOW, with the help of our network of grassroots activists, will continue to push a feminist agenda to the forefront of the national conversation, an agenda focused on equity for all. Through our work, we’ll make sure that attention will not fade because when we celebrate women’s history, we are really celebrating history as a whole. As women continue to break barriers, more women will be able to follow behind them and join in the march toward equality.
