Legislative Update Nov 7, 2021

From our Legislation Director, Jim Bonfiglio:

Some hopeful optimism from Las Vegas. The news is that there is no news on the Texas-style abortion law. It’s early, but the sound of crickets from Florida lawmakers about bringing something similar to the Sunshine State is telling. The Florida Phoenix reported a bill filed in September by Republican Rep. Webster Barnaby that essentially copycats the Texas law has gained no traction. HB 167 has no companion bill in the Senate and no co-sponsor in the House. Senate President Wilton Simpson and House Speaker Chris Sprowls don’t appear to be on board. And  Sen. Kathleen Passidomo, who chairs her chamber’s rules committee, already voiced opposition. So it sounds like the bill is probably toast for this session. hope this link works.

So far, Texas-style abortion bill in FL seems headed nowhere in the Legislature – Florida Phoenix
There is a nail-biter pending in the 20th Congressional district race to replace Alcee Hastings. Home health care business owner Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick and Broward County Commissioner Dale Holness are separated by three votes out of more than 49,000 ballots cast in Tuesday’s Democratic Party primary, as of Friday morning. This triggered a machine recount and most likely a manual recount after that. The race winner will not be certified until Nov. 14 because the Broward and Palm Beach SOEs still have to accept and count military and overseas ballots that are received up to Nov. 12 but postmarked as of the date of the special election.
Democratic contender for late Alcee Hastings seat remains undetermined (palmbeachpost.com)
