The Zora Neale Hurston Florida Education Foundation (ZNHFEF) has a unique mission, which is to preserve and promote the literary and local legacy of the world-renowned author and anthropologist, Zora Neale Hurston.
Recently, St. Lucie County transferred ownership of the former St. Lucie County Welfare Home and Agape Center to the ZNHFEF. The facility once served as a segregated nursing home and a senior daycare center for many years. This building is where Zora spent her final days before passing there in 1960. Now, the location is a designated historic sight in the City of Fort Pierce.
The ZNHFEF is in the process of renovating this facility to create The Zora Neale Hurston Dust Tracks Museum & Enrichment Center. Currently, the renovations to restore the building are 50% complete.
