PBC NOW will honor Senator Tina Polsky with the Alice Paul award celebrating the 19th amendment.
August 26th 1970, as part of NOW’s nationwide celebration of the 50th anniversary of woman’s suffrage (passage of the 19th amendment to the U.S. constitution), tens of thousands of women and men marched down New York’s fifth avenue. The “Strike for Equality” was held in cities throughout America.
The following year, Congresswoman Bella Abzug from New York brought a resolution to Congress to designate August 26th as Women’s Equality Day.
Suffragists fought for more than 90 years for women’s right to vote in America. Women, we must value our vote. It is so vital that all know our proud history and that we do not take our vote for granted.
Alice Paul was the chief strategist for the 20th century Women’s suffrage Movement. She introduced the United States to nonviolent civil disobedience as a nationwide political strategy. Recognizing that the vote alone would not ensure women’s equality, in 1923 Alice Paul authored the ERA Equal rights amendment to the United States Constitution.
