SUMMARY:Invitation to Tue. 6-24-25 Noon Zoom Clearinghouse on Women's Issues Meeting
DESCRIPTION:https://us02web.zoom.us/ meeting/register/ tZApdumorjwiHtRC2_ MZGFCpNQz79Kah67k5 \nAfter registering at above link\, or CWI webpage https://womensclearinghouse.org\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting Tue 6-24\, 2025\, 12 noon to 1:15 PM (ET). \n“Understanding and Counteracting Threats to Reproductive Rights” \nIt is a major challenge for feminists to keep informed of the major threats to reproductive rights that have increased in the current Trump 2 Administration at the Federal and State levels. We have experts to help us understand the history\, types\, and importance of these threats to women’s health in general and to understand the possibilities and challenges of medication as it is used for contraception and abortion in the U.S and the world. Jan Erickson\, Co-President of CWI will introduce the presenters and moderate this CWI meeting with questions and answers from the virtual participants. \nAngela Cobian\, Senior Director of Organizing\, Partnerships\, and Constituency Team\, Policy\, Campaigns\, and Advocacy Division\, Planned Parenthood Action Fund\, Planned Parenthood Federation of America or an alterative Planned Parenthood expert will lead the discussion by providing a brief history of contraception\, abortion and Planned Parenthood in the US. Then she will discuss the Post Roe threats such as what was covered in Project 2025\, the Trump Exec Orders\, Congressional Legislation\, and especially threatening state legislation. She will then cover strategies and actions that give us hope and describe how we can counteract these threats. She will conclude by describing  what is needed to save federal funding for Planned Parenthood which was threatened by the House version with  the elimination of Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood Health Clinics. \n Kirsten Moore\, Director of Expanding  Medication Abortion Access (EMAAProject.org) which seeks to improve  the way medications prescribed for medication abortion care are dispensed in the U.S. to make the process consistent with the medical and scientific evidence and to meet women’s needs. Kirsten Moore will focus on the difference between emergency contraception and abortion. She will also explain how medications often used for abortions also help with many other health solutions and thus why restrictions on their use are even more dangerous. Her call to action is for MifeInAll 50. \nCWI Elections \nAfter the Q&A at the end of the meeting\, we will have the CWI annual elections meeting of its officers and board of directors.  Please let Sue Klein or Jan Erickson know if you would like to join us on the CWI Board. The Board Members who will continue to the second year of their term include Holly Taggert Joseph\, Treasurer; Kathy Chiron\, Secretary; and Loretto Gubernatis\, VP Media Outreach. The Members who will run for reelection during the 6/24 meeting to terms ending in 2027 include Sue Klein and Jan Erickson\, Co-Presidents; Connie Cordovilla\, VP Membership; Alotta Taylor\, VP Diversity; Jeanette Lim Esbrook\, VP Legal Affairs; and Sherry Klein\, VP Technology. \nCordially\, \nSue Klein and Jan Erickson\, Co-Presidents\, CWI \nsklein@feminist.org> <http://www.feminist.org/

SUMMARY:Red Wine & Blue: The truth about immigration in the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles student Jasyln Hernandez graduated from high school last week\, just like thousands of other teenagers. But her father wasn’t there to see it.1 \nHe was one of two dozen people taken in an ICE raid at a carwash where he worked\, and Jaslyn doesn’t know when she’ll see him again. Only four of the 26 people detained have been located by their families.2 \nICE raids of workplaces\, courthouses\, and even school neighborhoods are becoming more frequent\, with a goal of arresting 3\,000 people a day\, separating families and shutting down businesses. And now the National Guard are accompanying ICE on many of these raids.3 \nDonald Trump campaigned on deporting “criminals” but the reality has been very different. What laws allow ICE to detain people without due process? What happens to children once their parents are taken? And what can we do to help protect this vulnerable community? We’re going to find out! \nJoin us on Tuesday\, June 24\, at 7:30PM ET to hear from Mayra Casas Jackson of the Immigrant & Refugee Law Center as we discuss immigration basics\, the rights of immigrants\, and how you can offer real support.  \nRSVP now for Understanding Immigration Enforcement and How to Help on Tuesday\, June 24 at 7:30PM ET! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur immigrant neighbors are a vital part of our communities and they deserve to feel safe\, supported\, and welcome. \nNot only do immigrants without legal status pay nearly $60 billion in federal taxes every year\, but they are people who expand the beautiful tapestry that makes up our nation.4 \nTaking action at the local level can absolutely make a difference\, as it is our local representatives who decide whether to protect kids in our schools or use local jails to hold arrested immigrants and help ICE facilitate these raids. \nPlus\, mass disinformation is being spread about immigrants and their rights. That’s why we’ve invited Mayra to help set the record straight! \nNow is the time to get the facts about immigration in the U.S. Join us on Tuesday\, June 24 to learn about how we can take action! \nSee you there! \nJulie \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSIGN UP NOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to know more? SUMMARY:From Red Wine & Blue: Stopping hate groups in America
DESCRIPTION:When you hear the words “hate group\,” what image immediately comes to mind? Most of us think of groups like the Proud Boys\, marching in black clothes and carrying weapons. \nBut the truth is that there are 595 different hate groups operating in the U.S.\, and most of them aren’t wearing cloaks and marching in the street.  \nMost members of hate groups dress just like you and me and are having sit-down meetings with state legislators and filing lawsuits. They’re speaking at school board meetings under the guise of “concerned parent.” And they’re having a big impact on policies that affect our friends\, neighbors\, and children. \nNext Tuesday\, Red Wine & Blue is joined by one of the foremost organizations fighting hate in the U.S.\, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)\, to talk about how these movements are showing up in schools\, online spaces\, and our government.  \nOn Tuesday\, June 15\, at 7:30PM ET\, learn from the Southern Poverty Law Center how to stop hate in America! \n\n\n\n\n\nHateful rhetoric has ramped up in the last several years\, and it is seeping into public policy. Ideas that used to be considered fringe are now finding their way into mainstream media and political discourse. \nWhen Donald Trump signed an executive order recently banning people from certain Muslim countries from entering the U.S.\, much of the rhetoric he used came from SPLC-designated hate groups. \nWhen book bans are passed by school boards\, the reasoning is often directly taken from Moms for Liberty and other anti-LBGTQ and racist groups. \nAnd even the Proud Boys have begun to take advantage of the system\, hiring a white supremacist lawyer to file a $100 million lawsuit against the Department of Justice\, claiming that prosecuting them for their role in the January 6 insurrection “violated their rights.” \nIf we’re going to fight back against hate\, we have to learn how to identify it everywhere it pops up\, including in our government. And there’s no better expert to show us how than the Southern Poverty Law Center! \nRSVP now for The Current State of Hate and Extremism in America on Tuesday\, July 15\, at 7:30PM ET! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP

\nHateful rhetoric has ramped up in the last several years\, and it is seeping into public policy.

SUMMARY:From Red Wine & Blue: Women Are Winning (Really!): The Story the Media is Missing
DESCRIPTION:The headlines are discouraging: \n“Why so few women are in political leadership”\n“Experts warn women’s progress in politics is slowing” \nBut did you know that there are 37% more women in state legislatures now than in 2018? And that the total number of women of color in state legislatures has nearly doubled? \nIt makes sense – a Harvard study showed that every time a woman wins an election\, the number of women candidates in the next election increases 8.5%! In other words\, when women win\, more women run – and even MORE women WIN. \nWomen are defying conventional wisdom and we all need to know the facts. That’s why Red Wine & Blue is hosting two very special events in the next few days. \nJoin us this Thursday\, July 17\, at 7:30PM ET for Women Are Winning (Really!): The Story the Media is Missing. We’ll talk about why there is a perception that women aren’t making gains in elections\, and how the media and political bias play into it. And we’ll discuss how you can fight these outdated assumptions\, support women candidates\, and help reshape our democracy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP

SUMMARY:RSVP for The Sex\, Lies\, and Stereotypes: How Disinformation Undermines Women’s Rights
DESCRIPTION:A meeting is taking place in a Fortune 500 company. Five men and one woman\, all on the same team\, sit at the table. Who is most likely asked to take notes? The woman. \nWith no actual data\, women in the workplace are likely seen as the more organized\, neater\, and quieter employees. The result is that men are 14% more likely to be promoted than women.1 \nThis is nothing new. For centuries\, disinformation about women has been used to stop them from winning elections\, moving ahead in the workplace\, and even voting as citizens. \nWhy is it so easy for so many people to believe disinformation about women that undermines their rights? On Thursday\, August 14\, we’re going to talk to Dr. Bonnie Stabile\, Associate Professor at George Mason University\, where she founded the Gender and Policy Center. Professor Stabile will unpack how these purposeful lies are intentionally used to target women in positions of leadership – and how we can stop them! \nRSVP for The Sex\, Lies\, and Stereotypes: How Disinformation Undermines Women’s Rights on August 14 at 7:30PM ET! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPart of the reason women have had to struggle to have a voice in government and the workplace for so long is because extremists have used misinterpretations of the Bible\, junk science\, and politicians to spread the ideas that women were weak-willed\, weak-minded\, and hysterical (a word taken from the Greek for “uterus”). \n  \nThese lies were not only used to keep us out of the voting booth\, but the workplace as well. And we’re still seeing the same themes pop up today\, in sophisticated deep fakes and AI generated memes. \n  \nNext Thursday\, we’ll explore why false narratives about women are so widely believed and how outdated stereotypes and so-called efforts to “protect women” are actually being used to push extremist agendas and roll back rights. And we’ll talk about how to effectively stop this disinformation! \n  \nRSVP for The Sex\, Lies\, and Stereotypes: How Disinformation Undermines Women’s Rights! \n

SUMMARY:David Jolly: Running for FL Governor
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss this important meeting! \n“When I talk about the affordability crisis here in Florida\, and the culture wars that Republican leaders have used to divide us\, I want you to know that it’s personal to me. I grew up across Florida. But now\, raising my own family\, my wife and I have been forced to grapple with whether this is the right place to raise our kids. As Republican leadership attacks and defunds education\, refuses to tackle gun violence\, and launches culture wars to drive people apart rather than bringing us together\, we all worry about our kids’ future. \nThat’s why I’m running for Governor: Because I know that it doesn’t have to be like this. Florida’s next chapter can start now. But only if we work for it. \nThank you for being on my team — “ \nDavid

Johnson joined a group of representatives who have left the state to grind this anti-democracy plot to a halt.1 \nAnd she’s been VERY loud about exactly what the Texas extremists have been trying to pull\, saying\, \n“When Donald Trump called Georgia and said find me 11\,000 votes\, they said\, no sir\, that’s a step too far. But when Trump called Texas Republicans and said I need you to steal me five seats\, they said\, does July work for you?” \nRep. Johnson is refusing to hand over Texans’ right to vote and we are super impressed! Join us on Monday\, August 18 at 7:30pm ET to hear from Rep. Johnson why she and her colleagues made the decision to leave and why these battles affect us all – whether you live in Texas or not.  \nRSVP for Don’t Mess with Texas Featuring Rep. Ann Johnson on Monday\, August 18\, at 7:30pm ET to celebrate her leadership and learn what we can all do to protect our democracy! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExtremists have accused Rep. Johnson of abandoning her job\, but she doesn’t see it that way: “Abandoning your job is going to Cancun in the middle of a deadly freeze.** What we are doing is the fundamental protection by our founding fathers in the Texas Constitution.” \nAnd Texans agree with her. A recent poll found that almost two-thirds of voters in the state think this map redrawing scheme isn’t what the legislature should be spending time on. Instead\, they want relief and increased warning systems in the wake of the recent flooding Texas suffered.2 \nRep. Johnson and her fellow Democrats have faced bomb threats\, attempts to remove them from their jobs\, investigation by Trump’s FBI\, and harassment from others nationwide.3 But they’re not backing down. \nThat’s because they know this isn’t just about five congressional seats in Texas – it’s about protecting democracy. Today this is happening in Texas. Florida\, California\, and several other states are already talking about redrawing their maps to join the fray.4 \nOn Monday\, we’ll not only talk about what’s happening with Texas\, but what’s at stake for America and what each of us can do to help. It’s a special event you don’t want to miss! \nJoin us on Monday to get inspired by a truly bad-ass leader!
